Abstract
Whether financial education is conceived as consumer education, economic education or socioeconomic-political education is important for the identification of the relevant goals and content. The paper discusses the benefits and limitations of such different locations as a starting point for a curriculum analysis of lower secondary education in the German education system. The curriculum-based economic education-related goals, which are scarcely distinguishable from financial education and the anchoring of the core of present-day and future-oriented personal financial management will be identified and the related competence expectations shown. Finally, it outlines the challenges of financial education that demands balance.
