Abstract
AbstractIn this interview, Patri Friedman shares his passion to advance individual freedom by innovating governance. He talks about the shift from theoretical development of better systems to an entrepreneurial action-oriented approach of implementing them. This finds an expression in his practical approaches such as with seasteading and charter cities. He criticises “folk activism” – a theory of how humans’ instinctual relation to politics is shaped by evolutionary mismatch. He explains the need to shift mindsets from tribal-based political instincts to consumer mindset. Friedman discusses creating new jurisdictions with better laws, open-source legal systems, and charter cities.Offering advice to future “freedompreneurs”, he reflects on the difference between system builders versus community builders. He emphasises that building new systems is more fundamental, though far more demanding, than building communities. The former can become a game-changer, and is the platform communities are built upon.
